Tonight Congressman Steve Buyer (R-IN04) laid out his positive vision for the future while speaking at a debate that was hosted by Hendricks County Farm Bureau and took place at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Congressman Steve Buyer started the evening Thursday by thanking the Hendricks County Farm Bureau for hosting him and told the group how proud he was to be a Hoosier and how lucky he is to have raised his children with his wife in Monticello, where he still resides today. Throughout the evening the Congressman discussed his strong record of fiscal responsibility, economic security, and making tax cuts permanent.

Congressman Buyer spoke of his economic policies, believing in low taxes coupled with a spending restraint as the key to support a growing U.S. economy and creating long term job growth. The Congressman believes free trade policies are important to our economic stability, strengthening America's economy, so long as it is fair trade. Economic stability in America builds upon an open and fair trading environment with the rest of the world.

The Congressman believes taxpayers have every right to expect fiscal restraint from their Congress in dealing with the nation's budget.

"Congress can not keep increasing the size of the government at the expense of the taxpayers. The ingenuity of the American people has gotten our economy back on track before, and it will do so again. Washington will have to hold up its end of the bargain by exerting sound fiscal discipline—keeping wasteful spending in check and rejecting job-killing tax hikes," Buyer stated.

Education is a foundation to strong economic policy. The Congressman believes the best way to promote economic opportunity is through education and enhancing the standards in education.

"We need to ensure that students have access to a quality and affordable education. Students accessing quality education in all areas, elementary, high school, and college, will build young people a strong foundation and secure a bright future for them and our country," remarked Buyer.

A long supporter to renewable fuels the Congressman stressed how vital renewable fuels are to strengthening our country's security, preserving our environment, and moving the U.S. towards energy independence.

The Congressman continued to explain, "Renewable fuels are an excellent example of American innovation and new technology bridging to a more secure and diverse energy future. Policy makers must be mindful of the American family's needs across the spectrum—bettering life in America with cleaner and more affordable fuels without adding to the costs of other necessities."

Among top concerns for Hoosiers is strengthening the economy and job security, Healthcare and securing the homeland rounds out the top issues. Congressman Buyer spoke on how law makers must provide for Americans' access to high quality and affordable healthcare by fostering competition in the healthcare market and providing for increased innovation and research, and the development of lifesaving drugs and medical devices.

"Healthcare policy must ensure efficient and effective use of taxpayers' dollars in federal healthcare spending and protect market competition. We must increase price transparency and Americans' understanding of their healthcare costs and encourage increased research and development by the federal government and private entities," stated Buyer.

When it comes to protecting the homeland Congressman Buyer believes, first and foremost, that we must protect our borders and has constantly voted in favor of increasing the number of border protection agents at our borders and reinforcing fencing along our southwest border.

"I believe we must ensure that federal programs benefit American citizens and must require citizenship verification for the use of government programs. Immigration policy that I support secures our borders and insures no amnesty for illegal aliens—amnesty rewards illegal behavior and passes on huge public costs to the American people," remarked Buyer.

In the Congressman's closing remarks, despite the personal and ungrounded attacks by his opponent, he thanked the Hendricks County Farm Bureau for their support and working relationship over the past years. He has looked to the bureau for guidance and input on issues from trade and taxes to agriculture and relishes on the accomplishments they have made together.

The Congressman emphasized that further follow up and rebuttals to his opponent's negative attacks and distortions will be addressed by his campaign.
